Preparations are well under way for this year's Bala Standard Distance triathlon. However, we have been informed by the Snowdonia Park Authority that increased levels of blue green algae are present in Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid) due to the mild weather.
The Environment Authority is keeping a close watch on the levels and areas of concern. At the moment, the lake is not closed and people are still swimming in it with no known ill effects. However, the Wrecsam Tri race organisers are making contingency plans should the levels of algae increase further. This may include altering the swim course away from the algae blooms or, if the lake is closed, running the event as a duathlon.
The competitors will be asked to sign a disclaimer stating that they have been made aware of the presence of the algae at registration as was the case in 2009. It is worth pointing out that from approximately 800 competitors in 2009 not one person reported even mild symptoms (tickly throat, stomach cramps) to the organisers. However, anyone who may be suffering from a virus or low immune system would be advised to avoid swimming in ANY OPEN WATER venue.
British Triathlon is also being kept informed of the situation by the race organisers, especially as this is a European Championships qualifying event. |

2010 has see a terrific season of long-course racing from Wrecsam Tri members, as well as a number of top class results in shorter events, which included Paul Evans picking up a first place in the 40-44 Age Group at Barton Marina as well as second place in his age group at Llandudno Sea Triathlon, where Iori Jones won his age group. We’ve also seen a number of club members taking on their first standard distance events with open water swims, and Seb Navarro is off to Budapest in September having qualified for a world championship place in the 25-29 age group.

Well after all the talking, it was time for the Rees-Hughes road show to hit Roth! The reputation of the event superseding it’s self, the expectations of what lay ahead were high. Never heard a bad word said about it and boy we now know why!!

18 months ago I was a fellrunner who was at his happiest on the hills & despite having been a member of Wrecsam Tri for a couple of years I had no interest in triathlon. I was content to run the odd road & cross country race while maintaining Welsh Athletic accreditation, running on the fells for Mercia & hopefully picking up some more North Wales & Wales vests.
As I was approaching 40 however my legs were going from one injury/niggle to another & I was in the frustrating position of being beaten by runners whom I felt I should be beating. This came to a head when I turned my ankle badly as part of the Mercia team that picked up silver at the Brit Relay Fell Champs in 2008. Something had to change. I could swallow my ego & get used to being beaten or I could try something different.

Chirk Triathlon, the first of Wrecsam Tri’s three annual races, kick started what promises to be a bumper year in fast and furious fashion. Sold out in record time, with a record field this was always going to be a day of records but despite pressure from quality athletes like GBR Chris Standidge (Tricentral/Zoot) and Wrecsam tri’s Chirk bridesmaid Andy Campbell the course record held.
