Chirk Triathlon, the first of Wrecsam Tri’s three annual races, kick started what promises to be a bumper year in fast and furious fashion. Sold out in record time, with a record field this was always going to be a day of records but despite pressure from quality athletes like GBR Chris Standidge (Tricentral/Zoot) and Wrecsam tri’s Chirk bridesmaid Andy Campbell the course record held.
While the race does attract age group athletes it is very satisfying to see so many people new to the sport and hopefully smitten to continue. This sprint race with nearly 500 entrants was dizzying for competitors and organisers alike with a constant flow of racers from the pool to transition and onto the bike/run sections military like organisation was needed to ensure the race ran smoothly. The fact it ran so well belies the efforts under the surface and the work of the litter picking race director, race committee, volunteers and other support too numerous to mention.
