Chirk Triathlon is a sprint distance race hosted by Wrecsam Tri which takes place around April every year. The first edition of the race took place in 1998 and it is still going strong to this date. The race has a solid reputation in North Wales and the North West and serves as an early season opener for many athletes in the area. The event consists of a 400m pool swim in Chirk Leisure Centre. Typically on entering the race, competitors are asked to enter their estimated swim time. The time they put determines their start time on the day. So in theory competitors will be swimming with people of similar ability to them. Competitors are set off one at a time at regular intervals.
After the first transition comes a 23km out and back bike course down the Ceriog valley. The course consist of a short run through the village, a drop down to the valley, a flat section along the valley floor, a climb back into the village and a return to the sports centre. Like most amateur level triathlons, drafting is not permitted in the bike leg.
Competitors will then transition from bike to run in the grounds of the leisure centre. They will then head out for an undulating 5km run around some of the local country lanes.
