WTC December NewsBite

It has been two months since our last edition so we have a lot to cover. We have big news regarding the club website, two new coaches in our ranks, results of the London Marathon ballot and we will be looking ahead at our Christmas events, our mass participation events for next year and to Chirk Tri 2019.

Coaching Update
We are pleased to report that Thomas Brown and Sarah Wynne-Jones have both passed their BTF Level 1 coaching qualifications. Those who swim at Gwyn Evans will have seen them in action already. For the past couple of months, we have been able to ‘double up’ at the Gwyn Evans swims which we hope has increased the quality of this session.
Club Website

This has been a long time coming! At the start of this year the decision was made to modernise the club website. The new website is accessible by following the link below:

HOME

We hope you all agree that the new website looks the part. Functionally we are excited about the following aspects:

  • It has a ‘front end editor’ meaning that it should be very easy to maintain.
  • Publishing articles is very easy. This will be a great platform for our NewsBites, race reports and anything else we wish to publish in this way.
  • The bit I am most excited about – a members only area. By clicking ‘Client Login’ in the top left corner you will be taken to a page with 3 options. Click ‘MEMBER’S AREA’ and enter the password OurClan18. The user will then have access to protected documents. There is not a lot on there just yet, but our coaches have contributed some initial content. I am very excited to see how this section evolves!
  • Committee and coaches areas. Passwords will be circulated in a separate email. I hope that these areas will become useful tools for running our club.
12 Days of Christmas
Details of what we currently have in our calendar for the festive period are below:
Thursday 20th December – ‘Wacky Races’ swim night with Ollie Smith:
Gwyn Evans, 7:15-8:15pm. The usual masters swim slot.

Saturday 22nd December – Tom’s handicapped 5km:
Rossett/Burton underpass, 10am. The start and end point is the underpass between Burton and Rossett. The course below is approximately 5km on quiet roads. It will be ran anticlockwise (mostly left turns). Participants will be handicapped using their current 5km time so that if everyone runs their time, everyone should finish around the same time. There will be a prize for the winner. Could those who are interested in taking part please contact Tom Brown with their current 5km time.
Participants must be mindful that they are running on roads with traffic. High visibility clothing is recommended.

Sunday 23rd December – Kim’s MTB Ride
Llandegla, 10am meet. This will be a social ride. Please contact Kim Norman for details.

Wednesday 26th December – Boxing Day Run
Farndon Sports and Social Club, 9:30am. This will be a social run over the 7.5 mile course below. Those who want to do more can find an extra few miles along the way. If those interested could contact Steve Nicholls in advance, he has offered to book a table at Cleopatra’s for after the run.

Friday 28th December – HASH with Derrick Batty
This popular event is back for 2018! Derrick will release details closer to the date via Facebook. He would like an idea of numbers if possible. Those who are available on 28th and are interested in going, please contact battybatg@gmail.com.

Saturday 29th December – World’s End Trail Run with Bill Crawshaw
Meet at 9:30 am at the Minera Lead mines then car share to get to the ‘top’ of World’s End. This will be similar to the runs Bill has organised before. Around 10km, hilly and all off road.

Sunday 30th December – Social Ride with Sarah Ryder
Meet at 9:30 am at Total Fitness. This is a road ride and will be approximately 50 miles with an obligatory cake stop.

London Marathon Ballot
We are pleased to announce that the winner of the club’s London Marathon place is Lance Ball. We wish him all the best in his training and of course, on the day.
Chirk Triathlon 2019
A couple of points regarding Chirk Triathlon 2019. As we all probably know now, the date for the race is 28th April. As always, lots of volunteers will be required to run the event safely. This message really is intended as a ‘save the date’. It would be great if we could get as many club members volunteering as possible.

The second point comes from the race committee. For those who don’t know, the race itself is organised by a separate race committee (nothing to do with the club committee). If anybody has any questions or an interest in joining the race committee, contact Kim Norman (namronmik@hotmail.co.uk). There may be an opportunity to shadow at this year’s event with an eye to stepping into the race committee in the future.

Club Races 2019
Those who are on the club Facebook page may have noticed that Sarah has picked out some races which will earn participants bonus points in the club league next year. These races are:

  • Ruthin Triathlon
  • Denbigh Triathlon
  • Alderford (Ultimate) Triathlon (any distance)

These events have been chosen because they are relatively local. Ruthin and Denbigh both have novice categories and Alderford has a choice of distances. The club gazebo will be in attendance at these events and we will be putting on refreshments. Let’s see how many people we can get at these events!
Regarding Ruthin Triathlon; Sarah has kindly managed to negotiate a club discount for this race. Hold tight for news regarding a special club discount code just for us. In addition to this, the club will be subsidizing this race by a further £10 for members. Once all discounts are applied, this race may cost us peanuts! So keep the 12th May free in your diary as this is the provisional date!

Club Kit
We currently hold the following stock in a limited range of sizes: tri suits, short sleeve cycle jerseys, long sleeve cycle jerseys and hoodies. Please contact Rob Pullen if you require any of the above kit or to confirm sizes and prices.

We are also looking to purchase short sleeved, long distance tri suits for the stay of the new season. We have a sample of this suit in small and are expecting other sizes for fitting imminently. These should be available by February in time for the start I the new season. More information will be provided on Facebook Members Page in due course or contact Rob directly to find out more.

Other items vein considered at the moment are lightweight wind proof stowaway cycle gillets which will be in the club colours and a range of training tops which can be ordered as required. Updates on all these items will be placed on FaceBook and included in future newsbites.
